PostSubject: Week 3 - Tech Class #1   Week 3 - Tech Class #1 Icon_minitimeJuly 8th 2012, 10:39 pm

This week we are getting messy!!!!!!!!! So put the grandkids in the basement and come play!!

I love Gesso..... it is the best medium for altering stuff and provides a super base coat for painting!!

Today you will alter some chipboard or thickers type alphabet letters!

First.. gather your material....

Week 3 - Tech Class #1 DSC_0018-5

- a piece of cardboard to adhere your stickers to. This works better than paper as the gesso may warp your paper.

- alphabet stickers (chipboard or foam, or whatever you have). I used letters that I had left over.. we al do!

- paint brush

- gesso

Once you have all these, adhere your alphabets to the cardboard in a random type fashion...

Week 3 - Tech Class #1 DSC_0019-4

Once you have them down the way you want, aply a layer of Gesso over the whole thing.

Week 3 - Tech Class #1 DSC_0020-1

The secret with Gesso is to let it dry!!! I left mine over night.

You may apply a second coat of Gesso if you want.... I did.

Once all the letters are covered, I applied a coat of blue acrylic paint over the whole thing... let it dry!

Week 3 - Tech Class #1 DSC_0040

I then rubbed some white chalk over some of the letters to give it a bit of distressing.

Once it is completely dry.. use it on a card or layout...

Week 3 - Tech Class #1 DSC_0043

You will have until July 25th to get this done for 5 points!

If you finish this before July 18 when I post the last week challenges, you will get 10 Brownie Points!

Have fun!

I don't have gesso, but I looked it up and it basically sounds like a primer. I do have primer for painting walls. Can I use that?

For sure.. I don't see why that wouldn't work.

I know that gesso is a bit thicker, and is also used to add dimension, but the primer would work great for this challenge.. you just something as a base to paint over, or else all the colors show through.. (trust me! )

I haven't decided what I'll use it for, but here's mine.....I used a bunch of paint that I dried with the heat gun....it caused it to bubble which I thought was kinda cool.

I am using clear gesso as a base with a newspaper background and naked chipboard buttons. I'm hoping to actually use a creamy colour and have some of the newspaper show through and then use ink to antique it. Not sure it is going to work out how I plan it in my head..but it will be interesting!!!

I can tell you not to use felt letters, they don't take the Gesso very well.
