a little history ... i think tim holtz was the first to debut them but they were actually made by wendy vecchi using a stamp she had designed as a template.
the tammy tutorial does use the tim holtz die ...
these are easy to make once you get the hang of it ... i have used canvas, cardstock, patterned paper and grungepaper to make them ... if you try these in paper, depending on the paper, you may need to get it a little moist so it does not tear ...
you can use any 6 petal flower shape, ie diecut to make these
