For finishing a project? I have been using mod lodge however it is glossy and I would like a matte or duller finish.

Plus is there a "thing" that you would buy (other than the journal) when starting out?

Can you use mod podge but with a matte finish? I haven't put stuff on top of my finished pages. I probably need to on at least 1 of them because I've noticed the sticker letters are peeling up.

I have never put modge podge or anything like that over my finished pages.

You can also use a product called "Gel Medium" It is like a modge podge and comes in a matte, semi-gloss, and glossy finish.

And I always use "gel medium" to adhere things down .. stickers, letters, bit and pieces.... nothing will fall of then.

The one thing I would buy (other than the journal) are black and white marker pens... for doodling and such. And gel medium, gesso, and molding paste.... and ink sprays and acrylic paints ... I know that this is more than one thing.. but these are the things I must have to art journal.

Everyone is different... I know someone who makes stunning art journals using her micron pens and that is all. Hope this helps!

What about a satin finish waterbase varish? It goes on like tole paint in a thin layer. I bought the bottle here that I have (Apple Barrel Colors) in the craft section of a department store.

I don't think so.. she comes to art journal night every second Thursday, and she uses a small blank journal book, and just writes, draws and doodles.. it is so cool! I will ask her this Thursday night if she does.

That would work good too.
